Merida is a princess fighting to change her fate in Pixar’s newest release, ‘Brave.’

Set in a picturesque Scottish kingdom of centuries ago, incorporating many magical elements, and featuring a princess as its lead, Brave could have easily been just another fairy tale. In quite a few ways, it still is—it’s difficult to shake off the general appeal of enchantment. However, its approach to a different kind of love story and heroine is commendable, a step in the right direction towards creating more nontraditional role models and relationships for women in film.
