‘Drive,’ ‘The Descendants,’ ‘The Tree of Life,’ and ‘The Help’ dominate Golden Satellite Awards

Ryan Gosling took home a win for his leading role in 'Drive,' a favorite film of the Press Academy's Golden Satellite Awards this year.

The stylish and ultra-violent action thriller Drive drove away with four awards at Sunday night’s Golden Satellite Awards, presented by the International Press Academy. Nicolas Winding Refn, director of the film, was named Best Director and Ryan Gosling and Albert Brooks were the winners of the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor categories. Drive was also the winner in the Best Sound Editing and Mixing category.

However, the film couldn’t overcome The Descendants, the dramedy starring George Clooney and the winner of the top prize for Best Motion Picture. The film was awarded an additional win for Best Adapted Screenplay by writer-director Alexander Payne, based on the novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings, Jim Rash, and Nat Faxon.

The Tree of Life continues a good awards season run, with wins awarded to Terrence Malick for Best Original Screenplay and Jessica Chastain for Best Supporting Actress. Chastain also shares a win with the cast of The Help, a Special Achievement for Best Ensemble announced earlier this month. Cast member Viola Davis took home one of the evening’s top honors for Best Actress.

Other notable film accolades went to The Adventures of Tintin for Best Animated Film, Mysteries of Lisbon for Best Foreign Film, and Senna for Best Documentary.

The Golden Satellite Awards honors excellence in film, television, radio, and new media by the International Press Academy.
