KAREN’S PICKS: The Soundtrack of My Summer – 2010 Edition

With summer wrapping up and school back in session (For some of us!), there is one constant that will always take us back to the good memories made, and that constant is music. Here, I share 12 of my favorite hot hits of the summer, including a couple that you probably haven’t heard on the radio. Download ’em, listen, and relive those good times of the summer of 2010.

“Dynamite” – Taio Cruz
British breakthrough artist Taio Cruz’s second US single is about wanting to celebrate and live life, to the point of exploding…like dynamite. The highly addictive and danceable tune is the perfect kick-off song for a party.

“I Like It” – Enrique Iglesias feat. Pitbull
Sampling Lionel Richie’s 1983 hit “All Night Long,” with Pitbull’s rapping, and hella autotune, once-was Latino superstar Enrique Iglesias makes a comeback with this highly energetic club anthem off the Jersey Shore soundtrack. Fist pump it up, y’all!

“OMG” – Usher feat. will.i.am.
Another superstar who made a comeback this summer, Usher teams up with Black Eyed Peas star will.i.am. to crank up even more autotune and a sports crowd roar with this tribute to the overused Internet acronym, used in the context of describing a sexy girl in a club. In all seriousness, like those three letters, you won’t be able to get enough of this song.

“Touch” – Natasha Bedingfield
The sensational Miss Bedingfield soars vocally on this euphoric dance track. There’s a nice, big city feel to it–like, it’s the kind of song that should be playing on a loudspeaker as crowds of people cross the street during rush hour traffic in NYC, and they all can feel like they’re in a movie.

“Something ‘Bout Love” – David Archuleta
The young American Idol runner-up (During the 2008 season) talks about the innocence of that one emotion in an up-tempo, retro 80s-influenced tune. It’s the perfect marriage of fluffy and groovy–and a sign of good things to come out of his second studio album, The Other Side of Down, out October 5th.

“Teenage Dream” – Katy Perry
The title track off of Katy’s upcoming new album is about another kind of love–the raw, sensual, no-holds-barred kind. Whether you were in a fun summer fling, stayed in a committed relationship, or simply were crushing on someone, this song passionately sums those feelings up to a T.

“Alejandro” – Lady Gaga
Although Gaga’s third single off of The Fame Monster has been compared in sound to Ace of Base and Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita,” only she can write off the main man, Fernando, and Roberto in one hit. “Hot like Mexico, rejoice!”

“Don’t Waste the Pretty” – Allison Iraheta feat. Orianthi
Revamped with an electrifying guest appearance by her Glam Nation tour mate and Michael Jackson’s former guitarist Orianthi, 18-year-old pop-rock star Allison Iraheta delivers a powerful message on this mid-tempo track on self-acceptance after rejection. It uplifts listeners, but also is fun to rock out to, thanks to the collaboration of two strong and talented young women.

“Any Way You Want It” / “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin'” – Glee Cast
The feel-good mash-up of two Journey hits by the most musically talented cast on television made these timeless songs fresh. It’ll serve us well till season two starts up in September and gives us more new music!

“Mine” – Taylor Swift
A princess of today’s mainstream music world sings about fairy tale love yet again in her newest single, but yet again, it’s also hard to not fall in love with her heartfelt and easy-to-sing-along-to lyrics. Can’t wait to say “Mine” to her upcoming album Speak Now when it comes out in October!

“Sunset Blvd” – Tyler Hilton
Singer-songwriter/dorky BAMF Tyler Hilton‘s ode to making it in Hollywood resonated well with my personal journey this summer. Plus, it’d make a great addition to a road trip playlist–for ANY season!

“California Song” – Brooke White
While Tyler sings about one Los Angeles street, Brooke White takes on the entire Golden State in her aptly titled “California Song.” The organic tune is sure to bring warmth and happiness, as well as nostalgia for summers past and excitement for future summers, whether you’re in California or beyond.
